BRITISH ISLES website about BRITISH ISLES
THE BRITISH ISLES is the name given to the group of islands that lie off the northwestern coast of Europe.

The two largest islands are Great Britain, and Ireland. The United Kingdom consists of Great Britain, which includes England, Scotland and Wales, and Northern Ireland. The north and west are mostly

highland. Central and southern Britain are more low-lying, a mixture of rolling farmland and sprawling cities.

The sea has played an important part in Britain's history. Sailors traveled to distant parts of the globe and Britain built up one of the largest empires the world has ever seen.

All over Great Britain and Ireland, there are ruins of ancient castles. Some have massive stone walls and towers. They were built in the Middle Ages to defend a lord, his family, his servants, and his army. ¡@ ¡@ ¡@
